SUSTAINABILITY

One of the project’s objectives is to reconfigure the Gaslini Institute into a facility capable of integrating effectively into the natural and built environments.

In particular, the project aims to obtain the LEED GOLD certification, by achieving specific sustainability criteria.

Energy and atmosphere

Through the promotion of energy-efficient buildings, as a result of using renewable sources; managing buildings’ energy performance and applying innovative design solutions such as optimising the orientation of new buildings; using innovative materials; utilising a balance of glass and opaque surfaces for heat and light control and adopting clean energy production systems, such as solar and aerothermal energy.

Water management

Through the reduction of water consumption and the reuse of rainwater for irrigation, sanitary facilities and other equipment and through better management of water requirements, from a technological point of view.

Environmental quality inside buildings

Through a series of interventions that promote better air quality such as the regulation of ventilation, the use of materials with low emissions of volatile organic compounds and the continuous monitoring of indoor air quality, in order to improve the health and wellbeing of patients, visitors and medical staff. Attention to thermo-hygrometric and light comfort within the hospital facility guarantees thermal and visual comfort, as well as reducing energy consumption.
